About Us

About Dr. Challa:

Dr. Surya Challa was born into a family of surgeons in South India. He graduated from JIPMER Medical College in Pondicherry, India; He continued his surgical training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Challa completed a research fellowship in liver cancer surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

After graduating in the year 2000, Dr. Challa worked as a surgeon at Catskill Regional Med Center in Harris, NY and at Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Virginia. After his marriage, Dr. Challa moved to the Tidewater area where he presently resides with his wife and sons. His interests include racquetball, travel, music and electronics.

Dr.Challa has been listed in the “Guide to America’s Top Surgeons” 2004-2005 edition and Strathmore’s “Who’s Who Worldwide Honors 2008”. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of General Surgeons, American Society for Breast Surgeons, Medical Society of Virginia and the JIPMER Alumni Association of North America.

Practice information

Dr. Challa's nurse Carol and office manager Faith are the main contact persons. Other staff including receptionists, nurses and vascular technicians is very knowledgeable and courteous.

Dr. Challa's interest and expertise includes phlebology, the study of veins. He has had extensive exposure to and interest in venous disease. He has been performing Varicose Vein procedures since 2008 and has performed more than four hundred procedures without complications. His results have been exemplary. After initial evaluation, Dr. Challa can tailor a plan to suit your needs. For procedures not covered by insurance, the staff works out various payment plans.

Office Procedures offered include:

1. Radio frequency ablation - non surgical method of eliminating poor veins
2. Micro phlebectomy - minor surgical procedure to remove prominent veins
3. Sclerotherapy- spider vein injections using veinlite, magnification and a tiny needle.
4. Duplex ultrasound- to evaluate the venous circulation in the leg
